The honest headline is that these effects are consistent across trials but small, so capsaicin belongs in the "helpful nudge alongside diet and exercise" category, not the "fat burner" category the marketing implies.

What Is Cayenne and Capsaicin?

Cayenne is a chili pepper, and its active compound is capsaicin (along with related "capsaicinoids"). Capsaicin is what makes peppers feel hot, measured on the Scoville scale, and that same heat is the key to how it works: it activates a receptor called TRPV1, the body's warmth-and-irritation sensor.

When you see cayenne or capsaicin in a supplement, it is usually there for its metabolic and appetite effects. The research on those is surprisingly deep, and refreshingly honest about the size of the effect.

How Does Capsaicin Work?

By triggering TRPV1, capsaicin briefly activates the sympathetic ("fight or flight") nervous system, which slightly increases energy expenditure and the use of fat as fuel, a process called thermogenesis. At the same time, that signaling appears to increase feelings of fullness, so people tend to eat a little less at the following meal.3

One important mechanistic wrinkle: the receptor can desensitize with repeated use (the same reason regular spicy-food eaters tolerate more heat), which may blunt the metabolic effect over time.1 That is a useful, honest detail most "fat burner" marketing leaves out.

Capsaicin, Metabolism, and Fat Oxidation

Multiple meta-analyses converge on a modest metabolic effect. A systematic review found capsaicinoids increase energy expenditure by roughly 50 calories per day,1 and a separate meta-analysis of 13 studies put the resting-metabolism increase at about 34 calories per day, along with a small shift toward burning more fat.4 Controlled feeding studies also found higher fat oxidation with capsaicin, particularly during calorie restriction.67

These effects are consistent, which is what makes capsaicin scientifically interesting, but they are small. Thirty to fifty calories a day is a real nudge, not a transformation.

Capsaicin and Appetite

The appetite side may matter more day to day. A meta-analysis of pre-meal capsaicinoid intake found people ate about 74 fewer calories at the following meal, with a minimum effective dose of roughly 2 mg of capsaicinoids.2 Controlled studies similarly found capsaicin increased fullness and reduced total daily intake by around 10%.9 The catch, again, is variability: individual responses differ a lot.

Does Cayenne Help With Weight?

This is the claim to be most careful with. A 2023 meta-analysis of 15 randomized trials (762 people) found capsaicin produced statistically significant but modest reductions: about 0.5 kg in body weight, 0.25 in BMI, and 1.1 cm in waist circumference versus control.5 The authors' own word for it was "modest."

So the honest positioning: capsaicin may support healthy weight management as part of a reduced-calorie diet and exercise, mainly by slightly raising metabolism and slightly curbing appetite. Any product selling it as a stand-alone way to "melt fat" is going well beyond what the evidence supports.

Safety, Side Effects, and Interactions

Oral capsaicin is safe for most people at food-like doses, but a few cautions apply, especially for the stomach.

Digestive irritation is the most common issue: burning, heartburn, stomach discomfort, and nausea, particularly at higher doses or if you are not used to spicy food. People with acid reflux (GERD), ulcers, or IBS should be cautious, and enteric-coated capsules may help.11

Blood thinners. Capsaicin may affect blood clotting, so there is a theoretical added bleeding risk if you take warfarin, aspirin, or other blood thinners. Tell your provider if you use these.

Pregnancy and breastfeeding. There is not enough safety data on high-dose capsaicin supplements in pregnancy, and capsaicin compounds can pass into breast milk (there are case reports of rashes in nursing infants),12 so the cautious choice is to avoid supplemental doses while pregnant or nursing and stick to normal food amounts.
