What Is Chlorophyll?

Chlorophyll is the primary light-absorbing pigment in plants, algae, and cyanobacteria. It gives leafy vegetables, grasses, and algae their characteristic green color and is essential for converting sunlight into chemical energy during photosynthesis. Dietary sources include spinach, kale, parsley, broccoli, green peas, and microalgae such as spirulina and chlorella.

For supplement use, manufacturers typically work with chlorophyllin - a semi-synthetic, water-soluble derivative produced by replacing the central magnesium atom in natural chlorophyll with copper and adding sodium salts. This transformation dramatically increases solubility and stability compared to the fat-soluble parent molecule. The most common commercial form is sodium copper chlorophyllin, which has been used as a food-coloring agent (E140/E141 in the EU) and as an over-the-counter deodorizing supplement since the 1950s.4

Natural chlorophyll and chlorophyllin share structural similarities but behave differently in the body. Natural chlorophyll from food has limited bioavailability because it is fat-soluble and tightly bound to proteins in plant cell membranes.5 Chlorophyllin, by contrast, is water-soluble, more readily absorbed in the gastrointestinal tract, and reaches measurable serum concentrations after oral supplementation - a pharmacokinetic property relevant to any systemic effects researchers have observed.11

Chlorophyll supplements are available as liquid drops (often called "liquid chlorophyll"), capsules, tablets, and topical creams or gels. Doses and forms vary considerably across products.

How Does It Work?

Researchers have identified several mechanisms through which chlorophyllin may exert biological effects, though the relative importance of each in living humans is still being established.

Carcinogen and Mutagen Binding

One of the best-studied mechanisms is direct molecular binding. Chlorophyllin's planar aromatic structure allows it to form tight complexes with flat, polycyclic mutagens - including aflatoxins (fungal toxins found on improperly stored grains and nuts), heterocyclic amines from charred meat, and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons. By forming these complexes in the gut lumen, chlorophyllin may reduce how much of the carcinogen is absorbed into the bloodstream before elimination.2

Antioxidant Activity

Chlorophyllin scavenges reactive oxygen species (ROS) and may protect cellular membranes from oxidative damage. The compound has been shown to inhibit lipid peroxidation and support mitochondrial function under oxidative stress conditions in preclinical models.8 Importantly, Hayes and Ferruzzi (2020) note that even though chlorophyll derivatives themselves have low systemic bioavailability, their breakdown metabolites are absorbed and may modulate oxidative stress pathways throughout the body.5

Signaling Pathway Modulation

Preclinical data suggest chlorophyllin influences several cancer-relevant signaling networks, including NF-kB (inflammation), Wnt/beta-catenin (cell proliferation), and PI3K/Akt (cell survival) pathways.6 These mechanisms underpin much of the chemopreventive research, though direct translation to human benefit requires further clinical investigation.

Extracellular Matrix Support (Topical Use)

In skin research, copper chlorophyllin complexes have been shown to inhibit hyaluronidase - the enzyme that breaks down hyaluronic acid in the dermal matrix - and to stimulate markers of collagen and fibrillin production, potentially supporting skin structure and repair.10

Carcinogen Binding and Chemoprotection

The most rigorously tested benefit of chlorophyllin in humans is its ability to reduce biomarkers of carcinogen exposure, particularly aflatoxin B1 (AFB1), a potent liver carcinogen produced by Aspergillus mold on corn, peanuts, and other staple crops.

What the research shows

The landmark human trial was conducted by Egner and colleagues in Qidong, China - a region with among the world's highest rates of hepatocellular carcinoma, partly attributable to endemic aflatoxin contamination of the food supply. In this randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial, 180 healthy adults were assigned to receive either 100 mg of chlorophyllin or a matched placebo three times daily (with meals) for four months. Researchers measured aflatoxin-N7-guanine DNA adducts in urine - a validated biomarker of carcinogen-DNA damage in the liver. The chlorophyllin group showed an overall 55% reduction (p = 0.036) in median urinary adduct levels compared to placebo. No adverse events were reported.1

A complementary study by Jubert et al. (2009) administered microdoses of radioactive AFB1 to four human volunteers alongside natural chlorophyll or chlorophyllin. Both compounds significantly impeded AFB1 absorption and reduced peak plasma concentration and area under the curve, providing the first pharmacokinetic confirmation in humans of the carcinogen-sequestering mechanism seen in animal models.2

These findings carry Tier A (human RCT) status for aflatoxin biomarker reduction in a high-risk population. However, the studies were conducted in adults with unusually high aflatoxin exposure. Whether routine supplementation confers meaningful chemoprotection in lower-exposure populations - such as typical US adults - has not been demonstrated in clinical trials. Researchers and reviewers frame this as a promising preventive strategy that warrants further study in broader populations.57

Skin Health and Wound Support

Topical chlorophyllin formulations have attracted attention in dermatology, primarily as adjunctive treatments for acne, photodamaged skin, and wound management. The evidence base consists largely of small pilot studies without placebo control groups, so findings should be considered preliminary.

What the research shows

Acne and large pores: In a 3-week open-label pilot, Stephens and colleagues applied a gel containing 0.1% sodium copper chlorophyllin complex twice daily in 10 subjects with mild-to-moderate facial acne and enlarged pores. All clinical efficacy parameters showed statistically significant improvements from baseline at week 3, and the formulation was well tolerated with no reported adverse events.8 A separate randomized, single-blind split-face study using chlorophyll-a photodynamic therapy in 24 subjects showed significant reductions in acne lesion counts, severity grades, and sebum levels on the treated half versus the light-only control side.4

Photodamaged skin: Sigler and Stephens (2015) had 10 women with mild-to-moderate photodamage apply a 0.066% copper chlorophyllin complex gel twice daily for eight weeks. All clinical efficacy parameters improved significantly from baseline, including reductions in solar lentigines (age spots) and overall photodamage score, with no safety concerns observed.9

Skin biomarkers: McCook et al. (2016) applied 0.05% sodium copper chlorophyllin complex to forearm sites in four women and measured changes in extracellular matrix proteins over 12 days. The treatment produced statistically significantly greater levels of fibrillin and epidermal mucins compared to untreated skin, and also outperformed or matched 0.025% tretinoin on some markers.10

Wound debridement: Papain-urea-chlorophyllin ointments have a long history of clinical use in chronic wound care - a combination product marketed under the Panafil brand has been used as an enzymatic debrider in pressure ulcers, venous ulcers, and burns. While the chlorophyllin component is thought to support tissue granulation, most wound studies test the combination rather than chlorophyllin in isolation, making it difficult to isolate its specific contribution.

Overall, the skin evidence sits at Tier B - meaningful human signals with consistent direction, but requiring larger, controlled trials to confirm benefit and optimal dosing.

Deodorization and Odor Control

Chlorophyllin's deodorizing applications are among the oldest documented clinical uses of the compound, dating to the 1950s. The mechanism is not fully established but is thought to involve binding to odor-causing molecules in the gastrointestinal tract and directly neutralizing volatile sulfur and amine compounds.

What the research shows

Young and Beregi (1980) evaluated chlorophyllin tablets in 62 elderly nursing home residents and reported the treatment was helpful in controlling body and fecal odors, reducing chronic constipation symptoms, and decreasing excessive flatus. No adverse effects were observed. The authors noted that bacteriological testing did not support proposed antibacterial mechanisms.3

Chlorophyllin has also been used clinically in patients with trimethylaminuria (TMAU), a rare metabolic disorder characterized by the inability to metabolize trimethylamine - the compound responsible for fish-like body odor. Case reports and physician guidance suggest copper chlorophyllin may reduce odor severity in TMAU, although large controlled trials are lacking and individual responses vary considerably.4

These findings are Tier B at best for general body odor, and the evidence base for TMAU relies on case-level observations rather than prospective trials. This is an area where anecdotal clinical experience substantially outpaces controlled research.

Leukopenia support: A Chinese hospital-based randomized study of 60 patients with leukopenia (low white blood cell count from various causes) found sodium copper chlorophyllin tablets produced an 85% total effectiveness rate versus 26.7% in the placebo group (p < 0.01), with no adverse reactions.12 This is an intriguing finding, but the trial was small, conducted in a single center, and has not been replicated in Western populations; it should be considered preliminary Tier B evidence requiring independent confirmation.

Safety, Side Effects, and Interactions

Chlorophyllin has a long history of human use as a food colorant and supplement ingredient, and the available evidence supports a favorable safety profile at commonly studied doses. That said, several considerations are important.

Common side effects

  • Green discoloration of urine, stool, or vomit - This is the most commonly reported effect and is harmless; it reflects the pigment passing through the body.
  • Mild gastrointestinal upset - Including loose stools, cramping, or nausea, particularly at higher doses or when starting supplementation.
  • Yellow or black discoloration of the tongue - Reported rarely with certain liquid formulations.

Photosensitivity

There are historical reports of chlorophyll derivatives causing photosensitivity reactions (increased sensitivity to sunlight) in some individuals. Anyone with a history of light-sensitive skin conditions should exercise caution and consult a healthcare provider before use.

Pregnancy and breastfeeding

The safety of supplemental chlorophyllin during pregnancy and breastfeeding has not been established in controlled trials. Dietary chlorophyll from food is considered safe, but high-dose supplemental forms should be avoided during pregnancy or nursing unless directed by a physician.

Drug interactions

Chlorophyllin's ability to bind flat, aromatic molecules in the gut lumen that is central to its proposed chemoprotective effect may theoretically also reduce the absorption of certain orally administered medications if taken simultaneously. This is not well documented in clinical drug-interaction studies, but as a precaution, chlorophyllin supplements should be taken between meals and separated from other oral medications by at least two hours. High-dose safety

A first-in-human clinical trial published in 2026 found that sodium copper chlorophyllin was well tolerated in healthy male volunteers at single doses up to 3,000 mg, with measurable serum concentrations achieved at higher doses.11 Standard supplement doses (100-300 mg/day) are far below this threshold. Animal studies have also shown no adverse effects at acute oral doses up to 5 g/kg body weight.

Copper considerations

Sodium copper chlorophyllin contains a copper ion. At supplemental doses, the amount of copper delivered is small and well within tolerable intake levels, and studies have not demonstrated copper accumulation in organs at typical supplement doses. Nonetheless, individuals with Wilson's disease or other copper metabolism disorders should not use copper chlorophyllin supplements without medical supervision.
